What is galvanized steel?

February 1, 2011

Galvanizedsteel is a metal alloy of iron and carbon that has been coated with a type of sealant to protect thematerial against corrosion. It has two advantages over a zinc coating. Duringgalvanizing, the molten zinc reacts with the carbon steel to form layers ofzinc/iron alloys. The alloy layers between have increased hardness to providemechanical (barrier) protection and because of their zinc content they are alsoanodic relative to carbon steel. The hardness of these alloy layers providesmuch more protection from scratches than paint can provide.
